A Day in the Life of an Engineering Group Manager
You lead, support, and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts. As the leader of your team, you are at the forefront of the brainstorming of creative solutions for challenging projects.
You build and support the growth of transportation engineering and civil engineering practices in your region, working in partnership with your office director and firm practice leaders. You lead by example with your embrace of lifelong learning to develop your own multimodal expertise. You lead major projects and support client decision-making. You ensure the quality delivery of your projects and create an atmosphere of mentorship to support your team members. You are adept at managing conversations between disciplines, delivering projects from concept to construction. You coordinate with firm leadership and maintain a strong local network with your peers and clients.
You continue to leverage and develop your engineering knowledge by working on a wide range of projects which include:
the evaluation and design of multimodal transportation infrastructure,
corridor planning projects in suburban and urban contexts,
systemic safety improvements at high-risk intersections,
delivery of roadway reconstruction and streetscape plan sets, and
signal analysis and design modifications to enhance multimodal safety.
As an Engineering Group Manager, you understand technical software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Synchro and help guide your team to complete production work on projects. You participate in business development pursuits in your home region as well as across our North American offices. You will be actively engaged in the hiring of staff to grow your team, and in creating a productive and supportive environment for your staff. Qualifications of an Engineering Group Manager
Experience with or interest in managing staff
A professional engineering license in Texas
A bachelor's or master's degree in civil or transportation engineering
At least 10 years of experience in civil or transportation engineering
At least 3 years serving in a project and/or design management role
A broad knowledge base in civil/transportation/traffic engineering
General knowledge of project performance metrics and strategies for monitoring them
Understanding of AASHTO and MUTCD standards and Texas state and local regulations
Strong understanding of Computer Automated Design (MicroStation is preferred)
Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
Experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration
Specific experience in roadway grading, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling (Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads/Inroads) and design of accessible public spaces
The following qualifications are a plus:
Knowledge of SimTraffic, Highway Capacity Software, SIDRA and VISSIM
Experience with signal design

Work Schedule for an Engineering Group Manager
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule. This position is currently remote in the Austin, Texas region with the expectation to eventually work in-person 2 to 3 days per week at an office in Austin. We will provide the necessary equipment and flexibility to work remotely along with other Austin-based team members.

Since 2017, a team of Toole Design engineers and planners have provided full-time, on-site staff augmentation to the City of Austin's Transportation Department to deliver Mobility Bond projects. We are creating a new, standalone Austin office to complement this team by working on a range of planning and design projects across Texas, many of which are already underway. Our vision for our new Austin office is one that is talented, multidisciplinary, diverse, and cohesive.
