Purpose

The purpose of the Younger Member's Committee is to create an area for members under the age of 35 to become leaders in the transportation community through organizing social events, community service events, and professional development opportunities.

Goals

The following outline general initiatives oriented toward helping the committee to achieve its stated purpose:

  1. To maintain a current list of committee membership that is actively involved in committee activities.
  2. Increase TexITE activity/membership among professionals under the age of 35.
  3. Through coordination with the Membership Committee, encourage high school and college students to choose transportation engineering as a profession.
  4. Encourage professional development of younger members.

Objectives

The following describe specific tasks for that will enable the committee to achieve its stated goals:

  1. Update the committee roster as TexITE members express an interest in participating in the committee's activities, and maintain a roster of those members participating in the committee's activities.
  2. Coordinate with the Membership Committee in recruitment of potential TexITE members.
  3. Assist the Section Vice-President to incorporate items of interest to younger members into the TexITE meetings.
  4. Have at least two younger members make a presentation at each TexITE meeting.
  5. Promote fellowship through social hours during the TexITE meetings.
  6. Have groups of high school students visit traffic engineering offices to witness the profession in action.
  7. Make brief presentations to high schools or colleges to interest students in transportation engineering and encourage them to choose transportation engineering as a profession.
  8. Coordinate with the Student Chapter Liaison Committee to meet with university student chapters to promote transportation engineering.
  9. Promote and foster mentoring through informal meetings with knowledgeable transportation professionals.
  10. Encourage younger members to submit technical papers for publication and competition.
  11. Encourage participation as a group in one or two charitable, social activities.
  12. Develop a PE Licensure Guidebook.
  13. Determine the feasibility of conducting technical sessions focused to younger members.

Current Activities/Projects

Career Outreach

Several activities are underway through this project. The committee is finalizing a career guidance brochure targeting late high school and early college students. Proposals are also being developed for high school poster competitions and ways to promote science and engineering at the elementary school level.

PE Licensure Handbook

The committee plans to distribute a collection of advice on the licensure process, test preparation, and test taking.

Past President Biographies

The committee is developing biographies of past TexITE presidents as citations for the Transportation Fellowships awarded annually.

Speakers Bureau

A long standing task of this committee, speakers are constantly recruited on a variety of topics. This list is shared with local chapters, student chapters, and the vice-president in designing technical programs.
